In August of 1741, a friend and work associate presented George Fredrick Handel a compilation of Scriptural passages from both the Old and the New Testaments concerning the Messiah. So overcome and affected by the text, he immediately shut himself in for a span of twenty-four days, the time that it took him to complete his original libretto and score based on Scripture. Working day and night, and often forgetting to eat, one of his servants recounted that throughout these days his time was spent in the following manner, “He was praying, or he was weeping, or he was staring into eternity.”
