The Orthodox Perspective on Coping with Life Changes (January 29, following the Divine Liturgy)

by Rev Fr Chris Flesoras

How do we, as Orthodox Christians, cope with our own life changes? How do the spiritual fathers guide us to embrace changes in our life? Can nurturing our spiritual well-being empower us to cope and reduce our perceived stress during these inevitable times?  Saint Anna Philoptochos will host a discussion with Fr. Christopher and Dn. Joseph, addressing the Orthodox Faith perspective on coping with life changes.

Changes in life are constant. Some changes in our life are good while others are unfortunately tragic. Surprisingly, positive life changes, for instance; a job promotion, acceptance to college, marriage, childbirth, and retirement are celebratory events, yet these blessings are found to increase stress levels. While change in residence, death of a loved one, and a marriage separation are examples of changes we might normally perceive as stressful life changes, it may be astonishing to find that positive life changes may induce stress levels in comparable measures to negative ones. An accumulation of life changes in a given period of time lead to higher stress levels, and high stress levels increase ones susceptibility to illness and mental health problems.
The World Health Organization’s definition of health: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”  As an Orthodox Christian, we may elaborate and include spiritual well-being to complete this definition.

Please join us for an insightful and spirit-filled discussion.  For more information, please contact our President, Angeliki Rosenberg.

An Update to Antonia Bledsaw

by Rev Fr Chris Flesoras

Just a quick update on Antonia’s progress as we head into the Christmas Season. “Nia is doing great! She’s had a few bouts with colds and such, typical for a toddler in kindergarten, but she just keeps on surprising us with her joy and fortitude. She is actually in kindergarten now-the school she is in has a wonderful special ed program. Nia goes half days as they cannot hire a nurse to do her feedings throughout the day. But she goes Monday thru Friday and takes the bus back and forth. It’s funny, but she really enjoys riding the bus! Her face lights up when Katrina tells her the bus is here. And she loves school too. They do great work with her, and it shows. They even take her to the ‘normal’ kids kindergarten a couple of days a week.

We’ve also noticed that over about the last week, Nia seems to making more sounds, almost as if she is trying to talk, and yesterday, Katrina said it sounded at one point like she was trying to sing with a video that was on. So it’s been very exciting and such a joy to say the least.

So in closing, we are fine, Antonia is doing great, and it’s the season to celebrate the birth of the Christ. As new family, life is good.
Merry CHRISTmas!

“Buy a Bowl, Feed a Soul”

by Rev Fr Chris Flesoras

The Saint Vincent de Paul in Roseville, feeds in excess of 120 nutritious meals each day to folks in need. As with other programs, their program has been the victim of financial cuts and it is becoming increasingly more difficult to continue.

Through the graciousness of Sierra College, generosity of a variety of restaurants, assistance of our church youth, and countless other volunteers, there will be a event on November 13th to benefit SVdP, “Buy a Bowl, Feed a Soul.”  Hand thrown pottery bowls will be available for you to purchase for a $20 donation. You will then be able to partake of soup(in your new bowl), salad, bread, and a beverage. Desserts will be sold separately. 100% of the proceeds from this event will go directly to our local SVdP in the form of food to stock their kitchen freezers and cupboards.

The fall 40 Days for Life begins September 28th in hundreds of cities across the nation and around the world! This life-saving, peaceful, prayerful ministry is endorsed by Bishop Soto and all Catholics are encouraged to participate!  Our fall vigil will be at the public sidewalk in front of the abortion businesses at 1750 Wright Street, near the corner of Wright Street and Alta Arden.  Christians will be praying there and offering assistance to women, Monday-Saturday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, from September 28th to November 6th.  By God’s grace and through the power of prayer, over 4,300 women have changed their mind, choosing LIFE for their children, rather than have their abortion, due to people just like you praying at the Sidewalk!  Please join us in this life-saving, compassionate ministry!  Call Wynette at 916-955-1577 or see http://www.40daysforlife.com/sacramento for more information.

Feast Day of St Phanourios to be celebrated August 28

by Rev Fr Chris Flesoras

We will celebrate the Feast Day of St Phanourios on Sunday, August 28 for “things lost then found”.  Please bring your Fanouropita to Church before the start of liturgy.  The Fanouropitas will be blessed and shared during coffee hour.

Little is known of the Saint Phanourios, the holy Martyr and newly appeared of Rhodes, except that which is depicted concerning his martyrdom on his holy icon, which was discovered in the year 1500 among the ruins of an ancient church on Rhodes, when the Moslems ruled there. Thus he is called “the Newly Revealed.”

His name is invoked when prayers are asked for the recovery of things lost items, and because he answers our prayers so often, the custom is to bake a “Fanouropita” (“Phanourius-Cake”) as a thanks-offering and bring to to Church to be blessed and shared with the congregation.

Here are a few links for Fanouropita recipes, the cake traditionally eaten on his name day. Other recipes can be found on the internet as well.

In addition to our brothers and sisters in Christ who joined us from sister parishes throughout the four day celebration, I would like to thank the clergy and monastics who prayed services with us:

The celebration of our matron saint will continue tomorrow as we welcome a group of pilgrims to our parish: two Roman Catholic Priests as well as six novices  (3 from the US, two from Mexico, and one from Italy) who are preparing for Holy Orders in the Roman Church.

Truly, this outpouring of love for our matron remains a blessing to and an inspiration for all of us who call Saint Anna Church our spiritual home!  May our Lord, through her holy intercessions continue to grant us every good gift unto salvation as we celebrate her feast, build the Body of Christ in Roseville, and (we pray) construct a sanctuary in her honor and to the glory of God.
