Music Ministry

The Orthodox Church is the inheritor of a rich aesthetic tradition. Walk into any Orthodox service, and you will find every one of your senses engaged by beauty: iconography, incense, wood carvings, vestments, bells, and music. Orthodox music is the direct continuation of the musical traditions of ancient Israel and the early church. At our parish, we sing primarily Neo-Byzantine chant, a discipline with roots 2000 years old, and still largely unchanged from the vibrant choral music of medieval Byzantium.

The services of Vespers and Orthros consist mainly of a complex, ever-changing rotation of hymns sung by our chanters (we do, however, invite the congregation to join in on familiar hymns). Meanwhile, our choir leads the congregation in singing the Liturgy together as one voice. Congregational singing of the Liturgy is both an ancient practice of the Church and an integral part of St. Anna’s parish culture for many years. We encourage all members of the community to offer their own voices in our worship of God.

The primary goals of the Music Ministry are growth and education in musicianship, vocal technique, and Byzantine music. We hold regular rehearsals and welcome new members; please contact Pres. Josephine if you are interested in joining the Music Ministry.
